Charles Sumner is welcomed back to Boston.

November 3, 1856

Thousands line Washington Street to welcome Sumner back to Boston after his beating on the floor of the U.S. Senate. He is escorted into the city by some 1,000 men on horseback and some 20 carriages to his home at 20 Hancock Street. Despite the fact that Sumner requires a long recovery from his injuries, Massachusetts does not elect a replacement for him. Sumner returns to Washington and the Senate briefly, beginning on February 26, 1857, makes two trips to Europe, then returns to the Senate permanently in December 1859.
